A repeat non-paying professional tenant in Southern Ontario who defrauded 8 landlords was arrested the morning of March 29, 2022. The property owners affected rented properties in the areas of Toronto to Halton to the Niagara Region. A special thank you to the Detectives in the Financial Fraud Unit who completed the investigation. The charges were 1. Fraud over $5k, 2. Uttering a false document 3. Drawing a false document.
People are just not aware of how massive this issue actually is. For every irresponsible tenant out there squatting, there is another responsible tenant who can’t find a home to live in.
SOLO – Small Ownership Landlords of Ontario has been advocating since April 2020 for changes to the Residential Tenancies Act and the Landlord Tenant Board. Hard working families have been defrauded by at least 84 million in unpaid rental arrears and those homes, duplexes, basement units could have been rented to law abiding citizens who need housing. The delays to resolve these issues are taking up to a year, sometimes longer. Receiving a hearing date can take up to 4 months, waiting for the actual hearing is more time and many hearings are adjourned on the actual hearing date. Adjudicators are struggling to process their orders within the 30 or now extended 60 day timeline. Some orders do not arrive until 4 months after a hearing. The result has been that many property service providers have decided to sell their properties and leave the business.
