OpenRoom – A new landlords’ tool to access relevant public information

Frustrated with the slow pace of updating the Landlords and Tenants Board’s judgement that are supposed to be public, Ontario small landlords are trying to protect themselves against abuse by unscrupulous tenants taking advantage of the delays in decisions publication by Canlii.org, a website that provide access to court judgments from all Canadian courts, including the Ontario Landlords and Tenants Board. With the LTB decisions lagging up to 6 months at the Canlii website and many decisions are not published at all, this allows unscrupulous applicants to hide relevant public information about them.

A group of determined landlords after being defrauded, created OpenRoom.ca a website that allows landlords – and tenants – to crowdsource their public information judgements for all to see. This will benefit both landlords and tenants to get relevant information during their decision making according to their creators.

Open Room is an online legal database consisting of decisions made by the Landlord and Tenant Board that are self submitted by Landlords.

Open Room came about after the Landlord and Tenant Board has worked at a snails pace to upload decisions to Canlii.org.

According to the creator in their page “Our objective: To prevent unjust financial, emotional, and mental distress of landlords and/or tenants involved in the Ontario residential tenancy space. We believe in transparency and therefore make public information available and easy to search, fast. It’s simple as that.

Landlords are unable to carefully vet their tenants because the names of the tenant applicants do not appear on Canlii.org. Open Room is here to change that!
