It is with a saddened heart that we announce the suicide death yesterday of a young landlord and member of SOLO in the Hamilton area.
This landlord’s death is the direct result of his tenant’s non-payment of rent creating a foreclosure /financial hardship that he obviously felt he could no longer endure. That was a property he inherited from his father and had a sentimental value to him as well as being his house.
Although all the details are not outlined as yet, at his L1 ( Application to evict for non payment of rent) hearing this week the tenant did not appear and he was granted an eviction order. Later in the day when the tenant showed the member squashed the order and allowed a stay.
To compound the severity of this situation, a tenant advocate group is threatening his surviving wife and small child who are currently evacuating their own home for safety reasons.
An investor has stepped in to help with financial support to stop the foreclosure.
As small landlords we are not surprised this young man could get to this point in his life as many of us have faced similar pain and suffering.
SOLO will support his family in any way we can and will stand steadfast together to ensure the Ontario Government is held accountable for this tragic outcome.
