SOLO Landlords attended the governing party policy conference this weekend in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The Progressive Conservatives under the leadership of premier Doug Ford were gathering to “offer a whole range of activities for Progressive Conservatives across Ontario and to provide the opportunity to gather with PC Leader Doug Ford and PC Caucus” according to the invitation brochure. The conference also allowed “the opportunity to hear from inspiring speakers, discuss policy with the PC Caucus and provincial party.”
SOLO’s main goal to attend the PC conference was to bring attention to the fate of housing providers and good tenants being negatively impacted by delays at the Ontario Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) and the failure of the current Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) to prevent abuses.
The main highlight was when SOLO’s chair of the Board personally met Premier Doug Ford and in “an elevator speech” quickly raised the LTB / RTA issue and gave him a copy of the book “From Rent to Ruin” written by a SOLO landlord that detailed the ordeals he faced when confronted by a non-paying arsonist tenant without any help from the institutions.
The book is available on the SOLO shop under shop.solo.ca
SOLO also met several high ranking ministers (Housing and Municipal Affairs, Finances, Red Tape Reduction etc…) and policy makers and explained to them the RTA / LTB issue and was met with an understanding as this seems to be a topic that can no longer be ignored.
SOLO will continue to drive awareness of the necessity to positive changes that will benefit both good landlords and good tenants and alleviate the current housing in Ontario.
