A Toronto housing protest took place at Yonge and Dundas square on Saturday August 14th, 2021. Issues surrounding the current housing situation in Ontario were discussed by local residents who participated.
The opinions of protesters were captured by Jesse McDougall (video below). Residents are feeling the effects of large corporations taking them for granted. In addition, the level of resentment towards the provincial government is rising.
Jessica Bell MPP University-Rosedale spoke at the protest saying, “My Job is to get Doug Ford out of office in June 2022”.
Also at the protest were representatives of Small Ownership Landlords of Ontario (SOLO) Boubacar ‘Boubah’ Bah and Rose Marie. Boubah and Rose both provided statements during the protest, providing insight on the often overlooked ‘mom and pop’ landlords.
Even though the protest was tenant-led, Rose said that it was important for SOLO to show common ground with tenants who are finding it difficult to get affordable housing.
